About this song

The gates to the afterlife swing wide, but there are no fields of gold. An army of silent, blue-armored champions looks back, led by a god whose name was stolen by a dragon. This is the funeral march for a world that waited all its life for a heaven that wanted it dead.

Lyrics

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
All your life they promised
When the Hours come, the gates will part
You trained, you bled, you earned your ending
You kept the God-Pharaoh in your heart
Then the mausoleum shuddered
And the doors swung wide at last
And you looked for fields of gold and glory
And an army looked back

[Chorus]
The gates are open
And the dead walk in
Tall as a temple, dark as the river
Silent as sin
No sermon, no anger, no name left to pray to
Only the march, only the din
You waited all your life for the afterlife
And it wanted you
Where heaven should have been

[Verse 2]
Your brightest wear the blue now
Lazotep where their faces were
Your champions, your beloved dead
Still perfect, still patient, now his
He does not hate you, hate takes wanting
He does not speak, for words take breath
He only counts his shining harvest
And every heart he counts beats less

[Chorus]
The gates are open
And the dead walk in
Tall as a temple, dark as the river
Silent as sin
No sermon, no anger, no name left to pray to
Only the march, only the din
You waited all your life for the afterlife
And it wanted you
Where heaven should have been

[Bridge]
He had a name once, the dragon ate it
He had a face, it's shadow and shell
They say he was a god of morning
Now the morning he makes is a funeral bell
Strike him down in the burning city
Break the beetle on the wheel
The sand just carries him home to the deep dunes
Where the court of chitin waits
For the world to kneel

[Final Chorus]
The gates are open
And the dead walk in
Tall as a temple, dark as the river
Silent as sin
No sermon, no anger, no name left to pray to
Only the march, only the din
You waited all your life for the afterlife
And it wanted you
Where heaven should have been

[Outro]
The scarab rolls the sun across the sky
Now watch what he rolls across the earth
