About this song

They took his eye when he was just a boy, leaving him for dead in the ashes of his home. Twenty years later, a scarecrow of a man returns to the city of Estark. He carries a satchel of old spells and a debt to collect.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I was five when the hall filled with smoke,
a hand in my hair, a knee on my back,
and the thing they took, they took slow,
so my father could hear me and watch.

[Hook]
Take the eye, leave the boy.
Oor-tael burned, I did not.
Twenty years back to Estark.
Take the eye, leave the boy.

[Verse 2]
Twenty years of a borrowed name and dust,
grey wool, a staff, a satchel of old spells.
They saw a scarecrow cross the sand
and put their coin on the house with the flames.

[Hook]
Take the eye, leave the boy.
Oor-tael burned, I did not.
Twenty years back to Estark.
Take the eye, leave the boy.

[Turn]
When it ended, the socket went warm,
and the eye came back, a white star scar.
I could have gone anywhere at all.
I wanted the vine rows of Gish.

[Hook]
Take the eye, leave the boy.
Oor-tael burned, I did not.
Twenty years back to Estark.
Take the eye, leave the boy.
