About this song
She was a Mirran angel who died to save the people she loved. Phyrexia did not kill her — it admired her, and four of its five Praetors reached into her body to remake her as their masterpiece. This is the hymn of Atraxa, Grand Unifier: a sacred-horror choir for the angel rebuilt as the Voice of New Phyrexia, beautiful and terrible, gathering all things into one.
Lyrics
[Intro] [Verse 1] I held the line at Mirrodin's gate, the last bright wing the dying could see. I fell so the broken could flee the fire — and that was the sin they could not forgive in me. [Verse 2] They did not kill the angel; they admired her. Four hands reached in and called it grace — white closed my eyes, blue learned my mind, black drank my mercy, green re-grew my face. [Pre-Chorus] One brother turned away and would not give — so the red of my freedom was never poured in. Now I am the choir with the silence inside, a hymn with no door for the wanting to begin. [Chorus] I am the gathering — every kind made one, artifact and beast and word, the many made the few. I read your whole library down to the root, and pull from your future all that I can use. Lay down your borders, lay down your name, there is no outside left of me — I am the perfect, blessed, singular flame of everything you were meant to be. [Verse 3] I made a daughter out of want and wire, to feel the warmth that a mother should hold. But the heart they left me cannot remember the shape of a thing that is loved, not controlled. [Bridge] Beneath the porcelain, beneath the white, there is a girl who guarded the light. She screams in a tongue that has no word — and the hymn of the all-one drowns her, unheard. [Bridge build] Glistening, glistening, the oil runs gold, I am the gospel of all things controlled. Every scattered soul I will gather and fold — one prayer, one wing, one mold. [Final Chorus] I am the gathering — every kind made one, artifact and beast and word, the many made the few. I read your whole library down to the root, and pull from your future all that I can use. Lay down your borders, lay down your name, there is no outside left of me — I am the perfect, blessed, singular flame of everything you were meant to be. [Outro] They rewarded my mercy with a crown of oil and light — and I will love you the same way, before the end of the night.
